A voi:

My theory I’m sure about: Motion controls were supposed to be the GameCube’s special feature, to the point Nintendo designed their first GC games for motion controls.

See, before the Gamecube launch, Nintendo hinted that there was something really cool and unique about its controls…and then when they finally revealed them, the special unique feature was…analogue triggers with a click? While kinda unique I guess, definitely not something as cool as originally hyped. Now look at Mario Sunshine – when the game was first revealed, Nintendo didn’t show off its key aspect, spraying water. When asked about the object on Mario’s back (Fludd), Nintendo said it was top secret. My thinking is that’s because at the time the water was aimed with motion controls.

And How about the system’s big launch title, Luigi’s Mansion? The game’s vacuum-cleaner ghost capture things sure seem similar to Mario Sunshine’s Fludd, and also like something that could be aimed with motion controls. Without that, it seems odd they would choose that game as a big launch title, don’t you think? And it’s been officially revealed that the game *did* have other secret features during development, like support for 3DS-like 3D using a special screen that attaches to the Gamecube.

Also, Nintendo has said that they wanted to release motion controllers earlier than the Wii, but at first they were too expensive, and then later they weren’t able to poll the motion sensors as often as they wanted for accurate motion detection.
